The original Issue Manager theme powered the Dartmouth Engineer magazine

The story starts with Dartmouth College, who needed a way to put their Dartmouth Engineer Magazine online to reach alumni and current/prospective students.

WordPress needed issues

As a traditional publisher with an issue based production cycle they needed to be able to load up all their stories and publish each issue with one click. They also required a state of the art publishing system to enable email subscribers, attract Google searches and be able to distribute their story socially into Facebook, Twitter and other social media properties. Naturally they chose WordPress.

The IssueManager Theme was born to help Dartmouth manage each issue produced. From there we developed the plugin version of IssueManager, and decided to simply call it IssueM. Today over 1000 publishers use IssueM to manage their web based issues.

The metered paywall

Our Leaky Paywall took inspiration from The New York Times when they rolled the dice a few years ago. Their introduction of the metered paywall (which lets readers sample a few free articles before requiring to subscribe) delivered 2 major benefits:  Every article they publish shows up and ranks well in in Google search, AND every article on their site is fully shareable in Facebook and the rest of social media. In today’s search and sharing economy these features are a must have. As of mid 2017, the NYTimes is approaching 2 million digital subscribers and is continuing to refine their metered approach.

Today over 300 publishers use Leaky Paywall and it is being integrated with more payment platforms and fulfillment services.

Native apps

Apps have been in a rough spot for a while… they are expensive to build, time consuming to manage, and were standalone services. We decided to change that by introducing our UniPress platform for iOS and Android that integrates WordPress content, Leaky Paywall subscriptions, and IssueM web issues for a 1 click dashboard solution without breaking the bank.
